IIRC, the M16A1 was the finalized AR version that the military adopted back in like 1966 or 1967, and it had a triangular hand guard. The M16A2 had a rounded, ribbed hand guards and a brass deflector and forward-assist, the M16A3 was an M16A2 with a full-auto function, and the M16A4 is the version we have today that is a tad longer and has a picatinny rail that comes on the gun.
