M16s for the NATO loadout

IIRC, the M16A1 was the finalized AR version that the military adopted back in like 1966 or 1967, and it had a triangular hand guard. The M16A2 had a rounded, ribbed hand guards and a brass deflector and forward-assist, the M16A3 was an M16A2 with a full-auto function, and the M16A4 is the version we have today that is a tad longer and has a picatinny rail that comes on the gun.

A1's and A2's have a fixed carry handle meaning the carry handle is molded onto the upper reciever while the A3's and A4's have the picanny rails which allows the carry handle to be detached and different sights to be applied.
